Narrative

This dystopian story drives into the unsettling effects of living under the extreme surveillance and regulation of big data and government.

The storyline found inspiration in various sources, encompassing the challenges posed by the pandemic and lockdown in China. It additionally incorporated aspects of China's recently enacted advertising law of 2022, which places stringent regulations on the use of specific prohibited words. Moreover, the narrative draws influence from dystopian novels such as 'Brave New World,' 'Bloodchild,' and 'The Perfect Day.

This narrative uses various platforms, including analog, digital, moving imagery, interactive, physical, and environmental.

Graffiti is generally considered illegal and often categorized as vandalism. However, for the same reason, it can also be viewed as a powerful form of resistance. Public spaces are frequently selected as ideal places for expressing one's thoughts and emotions. The public spaces serve as “canvas.” “Express” and its synonyms are used to fill the canvas to show the strong will against the limitations in speeches.

Analog-Spray Paint

The board game centers on a world where speech is excessively restricted. In this realm, various organizations and factions are engaged in a struggle to either maintain or overthrow discourse power. This role-playing board game immerses players in the struggle for power and voice in this world.

Interactive-Board game

In this context, speech that is deemed harmful or offensive is restricted. Although the words on the installation are clear, their projection onto the wall is not distinct. This serves as a metaphor, illustrating that even clear statements or manifestos might not be effectively communicated to the public. Laser cutting technology is utilized to construct the body of the installation and to embed a light within it.

Physical-Installation

The video is a speculative depiction of a shopping mall in this world where the strict regulations govern the use of words. Characters or words that are not permitted may be replaced with emojis, synonyms, or squares (to indicate banned characters).

Moving Imagery-Video

The video satirically portrays a scenario where, despite its intention to promote the concept of free speech, key words such as 'freedoms,' 'liberty,' 'autocrats,' and 'counter' are censored with bleeps in both the audio and on-screen text. Consequently, the audience is unable to fully comprehend the message. The video plays in a continuous loop, with the beeping noise contributing to an annoying and uncomfortable atmosphere. This serves as a visual representation of censorship.
